Description

Senior Companion Program is exactly what it sounds like. The program brings people together to be a companion for each other! The primary goal is to connect seniors who are lonely and isolated, with a volunteer to create positive social interaction, support and companionship. This companionship has the potential to reduce risk of depression, substance abuse, poor nutrition, poor hygiene habits, and illness for both the senior and the volunteer. In some situations, a secondary goal is to provide the caregiver with some relief knowing that their loved one’s social needs are being met and allowing small respite time for the family. Volunteers and seniors are interviewed to assist with the match making process. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years of age, and be able to make a 1 year commitment. A background check is completed on all potential volunteers, as part of the application process. Both the senior and the volunteer are asked to make a 1 hour once a week commitment to the program. Due to the mutual need for companionship, both the volunteer and the senior gain from the experience and create some amazing friendships that have lasted for many years. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful program please contact Senior Services Associates at (630)553-5777 or email: acummings@seniorservicesassoc.org.
