What We Do

Naper Settlement is a history museum in Naperville, IL. The museum collects, preserves, and interprets Naperville's history from its founding in 1831. The museum is located in downtown Naperville on 12 acres with 30 historic structures from the 19th century. Naper Settlement preserves over 60,000 objects and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Naper Settlement creates community by connecting visitors to Naperville’s history through engaging, unique experiences. Volunteers are a vital part of our community and are invited to join us in a variety of ways.

  • All Hallows Eve October 18 & 19, 2019

We invite you to join our volunteer community during any special event! Volunteers greet visitors, engage as part of the bag check team, check IDs, sell beverage tickets and more. Volunteers should be 18+. A very limited number of volunteer spots are available for volunteers under 18.

Regular Opportunities as an Education Volunteer:

Youth and Teen
Regular volunteer opportunities are available through Naper Settlement Education programs:

  • Youth in grades 4-7 (in the month of January) are eligible for the Junior Volunteer Program
    • Applications should be submitted by early January in order to participate in training in preparation for the summer season which begins on April 1. Junior Volunteer Application.

  • Teens in grades 8-11 (13+) are eligible for the History Connector Volunteer Program
    • History Connector applications are accepted year-round, however, training takes place in early February for April 1 involvement, and training for the summer season begins in May.
    • The History Connector program offers two service options (details here)
      • Two 3 ½ hour shifts per month, weekday or weekend, April through October
      • Four 3 ½ hour shifts per month, weekday or weekend, in June, July and August

Adult and Young Adult
Adults and young adults (grade 12 and above) are eligible for the Building Interpreter Volunteer Program:

  • Complete a general volunteer application indicating Building Interpreter as your area of interest and your information will be shared with our lead educator.
